WILL
graphite, acrylic, linocut, cardboard, and, mixed media collage on masonite board
18 x 18
…
from the Origin of Beasts,
“…you fear nothing.
You have become a beast.”
…
when I was in Dublin, I saw the Book of Kells, a Celtic translation of the Bible rich with symbolism and imagery. I have long been interested in Egyptian hieroglyphics, and runes of ancient cultures, and so I decided to design, write, and carve my own.
the word written here is WILL, the driving force of purpose that courses in every woman’s heart, but flames and flies in the heart of a Beast. Those with will do not shrink from challenge, or from entering a dark forest of uncertainty. Their will is the hot core of being that leads them through obstacles. A Beast has will.
the letter W is “whimsy”: a coil of delight on a swirl
the letter I is “independence”: a prism on a tall stem
the letter L is “learning”, a sprout of something growing, ever growing
