STOIC
graphite, acrylic, linocut, cardboard, and, mixed media collage on masonite board
18 x 18
…
from the Origin of Beasts,
“…you fear nothing.
You have become a beast.”
…
when I was in Dublin, I saw the Book of Kells, a Celtic translation of the Bible rich with symbolism and imagery. I have long been interested in Egyptian hieroglyphics, and runes of ancient cultures, and so I decided to design, write, and carve my own.
written here is the word STOIC. I read a lot of Stoic philosophy, and respect its commitment toward remaining calm, detaching from severe emotions, and allowing life to unfold without being bound to expectations.
A Beast achieves freedom through disciplining her mind in this way. A strange irony is that there is freedom in discipline, particularly mental discipline. The Beast can achieve equanimity, and float on it’s calm waters.
the letter S is “selfishness, self awareness”: an eye with four arrows pointing toward it.
the letter T is “tenacity” : a core in flight, pointing toward a clear direction
the letter O is “opulence”, three cups above a lush river
the letter I is “independence”: a prism on a tall stem
the letter C is “creativity” : it’s illustrated as a stylized paintbrush or pen
