INSTINCT
graphite, acrylic, linocut, cardboard, and, mixed media collage on masonite board
18 x 18
…
from the Origin of Beasts,
“…you fear nothing.
You have become a beast.”
…
when I was in Dublin, I saw the Book of Kells, a Celtic translation of the Bible rich with symbolism and imagery. I have long been interested in Egyptian hieroglyphics, and runes of ancient cultures, and so I decided to design, write, and carve my own.
written vertically is the word “INSTINCT” which is defined as “a natural or inherent aptitude, impulse, or capacity, typically toward an individual’s survival.”
a Beast listens well to her instincts but considers them before obeying them.
the letter I is “independence”, a prism on a tall stem.
the letter N is “nature”, illustrated with a stylized feather or leaf
the letter S is “selfishness/self awareness”, arrows pointing inward toward an eye
the letter T is “tenacity”, a core in flight, toward a destination
the letter letter C is “creativity”, a stylized paintbrush or pencil
graphite, acrylic, linocut, cardboard, and, mixed media collage on masonite board
