FIERCE
graphite, acrylic, linocut, cardboard, and, mixed media collage on masonite board
18 x 18
…
from the Origin of Beasts,
“…you fear nothing.
You have become a beast.”
…
when I was in Dublin, I saw the Book of Kells, a Celtic translation of the Bible rich with symbolism and imagery. I have long been interested in Egyptian hieroglyphics, and runes of ancient cultures, and so I decided to design, write, and carve my own.
A Beast has lost her need to be sweet. She’s lost the need to shrink herself so that others may swallow her. Her body has grown bristles, and she doesn’t mind if few can touch her. There comes a time when the only just thing a woman can do is fight, and the Beast does not fear this moment. A Beast is fierce.
the letter F is “fortitude”, almost a scope, like in a rifle, illustrating direct focus.
the letter I is “independence”, a prism on a tall stem
the letter E is “earthiness” and is a stylized seed or vagina, illustrating connection to the earth
the letter R is “rustic”, the idea of being hearty, and is a mountain, the sun, a pine tree
the letter C is “creativity”, a stylized paintbrush or pencil
the letter E is “earthiness”, but this time flipped.
